Netflix isn’t Dead: Add These to Your Queue Right Now (2019)

With the rise of Disney + it’s getting a little annoying hearing all the hype. We get it, Darkwing Duck is on it.

Here’s the thing. I have been with Netflix since the dawn of their existence. They have gotten me through some tough times, simply by being there! I know that sounds like a cheap escape or a lazy option for healing, but I have to tell you…it works.

When you are in chronic pain, you must rest. Resting includes many options, which I take advantage of like baths, reading, drawing and just chatting with my loved ones. But sometimes you need an entire mental distraction from life.

This is where Netflix came in. I feel the need to defend my friend, Netflix during this Disney uprising. I appreciate the fact that there are expanding networks, but Netflix isn’t dead.

Here are my recommendations on Netflix Originals over the last few years. These shows and movies are a wide variety from humor to thrillers.

I omitted the stand up comedians because that is a whole article by itself. I am going to give each a star ranking out of five just for a little CBCInked flavor.

Add these to your Netflix queue today.

13 Reasons Why

13 Reasons Why Netflix

This is not for the faint of heart. 13 Reasons Why hits home on some serious teenage issues. It is an adaptation of a book by Jay Asher. It now has three seasons! This show left me with all the feels for up to three days! I haven’t let my step-daughter watch it yet because it was so raw and so real that it scared me.

Synopsis: After a teenage girl’s perplexing suicide, a classmate receives a series of tapes that unravel the mystery of her tragic choice. As the school mourns the death of Hannah Baker, her friend Clay receives a box of tapes with messages she recorded before she committed suicide.

Genre: Teen drama, Mystery

1922

1922 Netflix

One of my favorite authors of all time wrote this magical novella, Stephen King. Now as you know, most of King’s movies from his books are a slight shadow of his work, but this one wasn’t bad! Thomas Jane (another favorite of mine) is dark and the story is too. It is one of those movies that you can’t help but look at like a car crash. If you are looking for a twisted old hillbilly style movie, this is it.

Synopsis: A farmer pens a confession admitting to his wife’s murder, but her death is just the beginning of a macabre tale. Based on Stephen King’s novella.

Genre: Crime drama

Starring: Thomas Jane, Molly Parker, Dylan Schmid

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events Netflix

I love this show for two reasons. One, I loved the books by Lemony Snicket and the movie! I also love the casting here. It was well done, just silly enough and still had some new spunk. It brought in some fun-loving children actors that were respectful of the movie and didn’t annoy me. NPH crushed it with big shoes to fill as well! If you are looking for a goofy series, get into this one.

Synopsis: A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series of thirteen novels written by American author Daniel Handler under the pen name Lemony Snicket. Although they are classified “children’s novels”, the books often have a dark, mysterious feeling to them. The books follow the turbulent lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny

Genre: Gothic Fiction, Mystery, Comedy-Drama, Children’s fiction

Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon Netlfix

This has all the cyperpunk, sci-fi, artificial intelligence in one series. From a series of Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard K. Morgan, this is just the beginning. Kinnaman is interesting to watch act and the plot just gets deeper and deeper each episode. This one is totally binge-worthy. It just got renewed for a second season and I am willing to bet that it might be better than the first.

Synopsis: After 250 years on ice, a prisoner returns to life in a new body with one chance to win his freedom: by solving a mind-bending murder.

Genre: Cyberpunk

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy, Martha Higareda

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Arrested Development

Arrested Development Netflix

This may not be a Netflix original, but it definitely is the OG. The family of quirky behavior before Schitt’s Creek happened…was Arrested Development. Jason Bateman owns this role, and the others are right up there in hilarity. This is one of those shows that just keeps on giving…the laughs. Remember guys, there is always money in the banana stand!

Synopsis: It’s the Emmy-winning story of a wealthy family that lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together.

Genre: Comedy, Sitcom

Starring: Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bird Box

Bird Box Netflix

I hesitated a while before watching this one because of all the hype. I wanted to be sure it lasted throughout the trends and it was worth the wait. I had no idea what I was in for when I started this and it didn’t disappoint. Sandy B puts on a good show and it is otherwise well casted. The principle is far-fetched but they somehow made it very real. The stamina of a woman is the core of this story and that is a remarkable thing. I wish I would have read the book by Josh Malerman first! Recommended.

Synopsis: Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a survivor and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

Genre: Sci-Fi Drama

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Black Mirror

Black Mirror Netflix

Five seasons deep now, this one is a doozy. It got a lot of hype when it first came out and for good reason. This is a one-off type show where you do not have to watch each episode in a row, but you tend to do so anyway because you have severe FOMO. There are some that will grab you, some that will shake you and some that will throw you right off the cliff. This is a series that will probably blow your mind, or take it over, whichever way you want to look at it. Bleep blorp.

Synopsis: This sci-fi anthology series explores a twisted, high-tech near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.

Genre: Cyberpunk, Artificial Intelligence, Drama

Starring: Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bloodline

Bloodline Netflix

Hold on to your butts! This is a sneaky thriller that will literally have you guessing until the end. I started this skeptically because all it did was make me want to move to the Florida Keys, where it takes place, but it hooked me right from the very first episode. A murder mystery for the books! It takes you through three seasons of family chaos and Ben Mendelsohn deserves an award for his performance. BRB, I am going to the Keys now.

Synopsis: When the black sheep son of a respected family threatens to expose dark secrets from their past, sibling loyalties are put to the test.

Genre: Thriller, Drama

Starring: Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini, Norbert Leo Butz, Jacinda Barrett, Jamie McShane, Enrique Murciano, Sam Shepard, Sissy Spacek, Katie Finneran, John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough, Chloë Sevigny

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Netflix

I literally could not stop watching this. Not only do I love coffee and old cars, but I love Jerry too! His natural way of making literally anything funny is so addicting. He has all the best people on, laughs way too much and just gets paid drinking coffee and messing around. I want his life! This is one of those shows that will be the best 30 minutes of your day…if you can stop at just one episode. Grab a cup of joe first, though.

Synopsis: Jerry Seinfeld’s roving talk show combines coffee, laughs and vintage cars into quirky, caffeine-fueled adventures with the sharpest minds in comedy.

Genre: Talk show, Comedy

Starring: Jerry Seinfeld + soooo many more comedians

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Death Note

Death Note 2017 Netflix

Maybe I have a weird supernatural streak in me, but I love a good demon story! This is a remake to the older, Japanese manga version (nerd alert) and they did a great job! It has a dark streak, an after school special feel and all the Willem Dafoe charm. It’s a cheap thrill and a must watch if you are a weirdo like me. Just don’t write my name in the book!

Synopsis: Light Turner finds a supernatural notebook and uses it to mete out death, attracting the attention of a detective, a demon and a girl in his class.

Genre: Supernatural Horror Movies

Starring: Willem Dafoe, Nat Wolff, LaKeith Stanfield

Gaga: Five Foot Two

Gaga Five Foot Two Netflix

Even if you aren’t a Gaga fan, this documentary is a peak inside a very real, very interesting human being. It is also a glimpse into someone who deals with chronic pain, which if you have been following along in my journey, I am. This documentary is a beautiful showcase of the mind of mental health, pressure and the undying search for true love. It might just give you all the feels. She’s a Gaga!

GLOW

GLOW Netflix

The first time I saw the trailer for GLOW on Netflix, I thought it was going to be so dumb! Real talk! When I started the series, I had to convince my husband to watch it because well, it’s the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling…and it knocked me on my ass! It made us both laugh so hard, we were very surprised. Alison Brie is pure magic, Marc Maron is the a-hole we all love to hate, and well the rest of the cast make the show a 1980’s hit. Watch it, love it. You’re welcome.

Synopsis: An American comedy-drama web series created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch on Netflix. The series revolves around a fictionalization of the characters and gimmicks of the 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling founded by David McLane.

Genre: Comedy-Drama, Sports

Starring: Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Marc Maron, Britt Baron, Kate Nash, Gayle Rankin, Kia Stevens, Jackie Tohn, Chris Lowell

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Haunted

Haunted series Netflix

Much like Black Mirror, these can be watched by themselves. A group of people gather around in a circle (no it’s not like a cult) and talk about their paranormal experiences. Each episode has a different feel to it, some are ghosts, some are demons, some are paranormal spirits…some are dolls. Since it’s a reality tv series, it takes a dramatic approach to the reenactments, but it’s better than you think. It’s not for teenagers though! You may get a little spooked because of the real-life feel.

Synopsis: An American paranormal documentary developed by Propagate. The anthology series focuses on horror stories in which individuals or groups of people talk about their paranormal experience.

Genre: Reality TV

Starring: A bunch of real people

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove Netflix

By now this list is looking a little heavy on the supernatural side…but this one was too interesting to pass up! Plus, Famke is just so beautiful and fun to watch. This horror web series includes werewolves, witches, ghosts and demons, oh my! It also is a little funny, which I love. Bill (one of the many amazing Skarsgårds) is grooming himself for the role of Pennywise in IT for sure. If you know Eli Roth, you know it will be bloody.

Synopsis: An American horror web series produced by Eli Roth and developed by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman. The series is based on McGreevy’s 2012 novel of the same name. Secrets are just a part of daily life in the small Pennsylvania town of Hemlock Grove, where the darkest evils hide in plain sight.

Genre: Supernatural TV, American Horror

Starring: Famke Janssen, Landon Liboiron, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

House of Cards

House of Cards Netflix

Call me crazy, but I don’t care what Kevin Spacey did in his past, he is an amazing actor. It is because of him that House of Cards is successful. That and the fact that Robin Wright is utter magic. This show is the most non-political, political show on the internet. It’s more about murder and deception than politics. Well, I guess it may be political after all. Don’t let the stories of the actors’ past discourage you from watching all the season. Frank wouldn’t have it that way.

Synopsis: An American political thriller web television series created by Beau Willimon. It is an adaptation of the 1990 BBC miniseries of the same title and based on the novel of the same title by Michael Dobbs. A wicked one-hour political drama series that slithers behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C.

Genre: American Political TV, Thriller

Starring: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Diane Lane

I Am Mother

Just another robot trying to take over the world. This caught my eye because Hilary Swank is a pretty sweet actor, I love a good robot flick and I love a post apocalyptic future setting. This one has all three and a bit of mystery. It has an Alien-like feel with a bit of iRobot mixed in. It will keep you interested until the very end with its exciting turn of events. When will we ever learn not to trust the robots?

Synopsis: Following humanity’s mass extinction, a teen raised alone by a maternal droid finds her entire world shaken when she encounters another human.

Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller

Starring: Clara Rugaard, Rose Byrne, Hilary Swank

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Love

Love series, Netflix

I am usually hesitant to start any love story dramas but this one seemed a bit off. It didn’t seem like it would be hokey at all. And it was not. It was quirky and off-beat and everything wrong with the word “love”. Which is just what you want to watch. Watching the stumbling pitfalls of relationships can be funny and somewhat terrifying. Either way, it will probably make you feel better about your own life and love. Plus, Judd Apatow is just funny and he makes good stuff.

Synopsis: Rebellious Mickey and good-natured Gus navigate the thrills and agonies of modern relationships in this bold comedy co-created by Judd Apatow.

Genre: Romantic TV, Drama

Starring: Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust, Claudia O’Doherty

Love, Death & Robots

Love Death + Robots Netflix

There really are no words to describe this one! The title says it all. It combines artificial intelligence, cyberpunk amazingness and dark comedy with some pretty crazy monsters. It is unpredictable, not anything that you’re thinking and everything you want it to be. After all, it won some awards. Plus Gary Cole is in it. So we are gonna need you to come in on a Saturday to watch this. Yeahhhhh.

Synopsis: Cyberpunk terrifying creatures, wicked surprises and dark comedy converge in this NSFW anthology of animated stories presented by Tim Miller and David Fincher.

Genre: Award-winning TV shows

Starring: Topher Grace, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gary Cole

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Marvel’s Daredevil

Marvels Daredevil Netflix

This is another than Disney + pulled right from my life. Marvel’s Daredevil is one of those good superhero style series that makes you laugh, cry and jump all in one episode. You will fall in love with the cast and story within the first few minutes. It has a Batman like feel and it’s one of these series that has the same villain throughout all the episodes, which builds suspense like no other. It’s the only Marvel series I chose on Netflix, so you should know it’s a good one. Jessica Jones is a good one too. Well done Stan, well done. RIP Stan Lee.

Synopsis: Based on Marvel Comics, blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock fights injustice by day as a lawyer and by night as the Super Hero Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Genre: Comic book, Superhero TV

Starring: Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

MINDHUNTER

Mindhunters Netflix

A show where they figure out what serial killers are? Come on, if that isn’t a genius concept (and real life), I don’t know what is. This is a true to life series about real serial killers and how this team finds out what that even means. Also, it’s creepy, old-school and full of amazing factoids about our past. The setting is so real you will feel like you’re right back in the 70s.

Synopsis: An American crime thriller series created by Joe Penhall, based on the true-crime book ‘ written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters.

Genre: Crime drama TV, Psychological Thriller

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders Netflix

This show is epic. The Peaky (effing) Blinders are so gangster that they literally are untouchable. The cast is fantastic, the camera and lighting are on point, the lines are superb, there are just not enough things I can say about this show. Cillian Murphy is one of my favorite actors and he wins everything in this role. If you can’t handle swearing, sex, bloody murder or downright manly man stuff, this isn’t the show for you.

Synopsis: A notorious gang in 1919 Birmingham, England, is led by the fierce Tommy Shelby, a crime boss set on moving up in the world no matter the cost.

Genre: Award-winning TV Drama

Starring: Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Polar

Polar Netflix

This one is just fun! It’s colorful and fast and full of bloody action. Mads is my second favorite actor of all time. This movie is also hilarious. It is not meant to take seriously, but if you want to, you better be into manga. It has a ninja like feel with an assassin on the side. It also has heart! Give it a chance when you are feeling punchy. Plus, Katheryn WInnick is a pure beauty.

Synopsis: An assassin on the verge of retirement must put the good life on hold when his greedy boss sends a squad of young, ruthless killers to take him out.

Genre: Action, Adventure

Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Safe

Safe Netflix

This show took me a little while to get into. But it was worth the patience getting past the first episode. It was strange to hear Dexter talking with a British accent, but I got over it. The mystery of what happened got a hold of me and I stayed on board to see whodunit. The slow roll of how things play out is worth the watch all the way until the end. I won’t ruin it for you, but everyone dies. Kidding.

Synopsis: After his teenage daughter goes missing, a widowed surgeon in an affluent neighborhood begins unearthing dark secrets about the people closest to him.

Genre: Crime TV Drama

Starring: Michael C. Hall, Amanda Abbington, Marc Warren

Stranger Things Netflix

Obviously, Stranger Things! If you haven’t watched this, you need to stop what you are doing right now and watch every episode. This is a series filled with 80s kids fashion, hilarious one-liners, teenage romance, sci-fi monsters and well, upside down things. It’s everything you need for binge-worthy weekend plans. The Babysitter

The Babysitter Netflix

This is a McG mcmasterpiece. I just love a good hilarious movie about absolutely nothing. The Babysitter combines witchcraft, bullies, jocks and well…babysitters along with an awesome soundtrack. Do not take this movie seriously, that’s not what it was made for. It was made to make you laugh. Plus, hot chick alert. Also, some of the brutal scenes are hilarious as well. If you are in the mood to kick back and watch a kid become a hero, catch this flick.

Synopsis: When Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his hot babysitter is part of a satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.

The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House Netflix

Chilling! In a word. What a smart, dark and literally haunting show. Carla Gugino has my heart as an actress, but I would have watched this anyway. It has all the fixings for a perfect haunting story. Weird family history, haunted house, dark emotional backgrounds, that’s a jackpot for tv series horror. It will make you jump, laugh, cry and possibly poo your pants a little bit. The second season is guaranteed to be dynamite.

Synopsis: Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

Genre: Drama, Supernatural, Horror

Starring: Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The OA

The OA Netflix

What a weird show! This show may have you scratching your head a little bit but you won’t be able to stop watching it. Brit Marling is eerily haunting as she navigates through foggy memories and even foggier vision. Let me know how you feel when the entire cast starts “doing the moves”. That one got me. The evolution of this series is still as puzzling as the first episode but one thing is for sure, I am glad I rode the OA wave.

Synopsis: Seven years after vanishing from her home, a young woman returns with mysterious new abilities and recruits five strangers for a secret mission.

Genre: Mystery, Drama, Science Fiction, Supernatural, Fantasy

Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru

Tony Robbins: I am not your Guru Netflix

Real talk, I balled like a baby through this entire thing. Tony is my spirit animal. He goes behind the scenes of his huge motivational talks and shows you his life. Then he takes you in front of the camera and shows you how he literally changes people’s lives. There is something so strong about Tony that moves me. Whenever I am feeling unsure of my life, I pull up a talk by him and I instantly feel better. Grab the tissues and tune in to this documentary if you need a little inspiration.

Genre: Documentary

Trailer Park Boys

Trailer Park Boys Netflix

There is a reason the genre here is cult tv shows. This one of those shows where you can’t stop watching the car crash of their lives. It is so trashy that you end up turning it off and thanking the heavens that you are normal. But then they made it to Netflix and it was like the cult got their dream come true. Just give it a chance without judgement and you will laugh. Especially at Bubbles.

Synopsis: Follow the booze-fueled misadventures of three longtime pals and petty serial criminals who run scams from their Nova Scotia trailer park.

Genre: Cult TV Shows

Starring: Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay, Robb Wells

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Travelers

Travelers Netflix

Don’t get too excited, because they just canceled this but it does come to somewhat of an end. Travelers is a great show! I love how they cancel all the good ones…Fleabag for instance. This has a sci-fi feel because it does include time travel. But they do it in a unique way where it doesn’t feel hokey! Plus, who doesn’t love Eric McCormack? Try it out when you are feeling “Back to the Futurey”.

Synopsis: A federal agent tracks four people who suddenly seem to possess entirely new personalities, leading to a startling discovery about humanity’s future.

Genre: Canadian TV shows

Starring: Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Velvet Buzzsaw

Velvet Buzzsaw Netflix

Artsy fartsy, this one is! With a twist of murder, a hint of artificial intelligence and a splash of ghosts…this one is super interesting. Jake is pretty fun to watch and the setting is in an art gallery amongst other places, so it’s posh enough to ask – what happens? Dive into the world of the rich and find out why that paint is dripping upside down. You might like the weirdness.

Synopsis: A feared critic, an icy gallery owner and an ambitious assistant snap up a recently deceased artist’s stash of paintings — with dire consequences.

Genre: Crime Drama

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wet Hot American Summer

Wet Hot American Summer Netflix

This almost feels like a Saturday Night Live skit, on acid. If you have ever gone to summer camp or wished you had, watch this. The subtle nuances and tiny ways they bring in the old school summer camp vibes are really classic. Great cast, weird scenes, something do with a can of beans…and you have Wet Hot American magic. It says dark comedy as the genre, I think not. It’s too quirky for any of that! Enjoy an hour and a half of nothing and everything at the same time.

Synopsis: Everyone wants a final shot at action on the last day at Camp Firewood, in this campy 1980s summer-camp spoof from the creators of “The State.”

Genre: Dark Comedy

Starring: Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

White Gold

White Gold Netflix

I started watching this because it had 1980s in the synopsis. Not going to lie, I also watched it because it had the guy from Gossip Girl in it. I was surprised by how funny it was! You have to like British humor (which I do) to really get into it. There are two seasons and they are fumbly, bumbly…well, gold! This is an off the cuff random show that will not change your life but it will pass the time with a smile. And you can check out all the 1980s hairstyles, clothes and attitude to boot.

Synopsis: In 1980s Essex, cocky salesman Vincent Swan and his unscrupulous team will do anything to get the sale — including throwing honesty out the window.

Genre: British TV Comedy

Starring: Ed Westwick, James Buckley, Joe Thomas

CBCInked Rank: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wine Country

Wine Country Netflix

As soon as the trailer hit for this, I knew I was in. It is a compilation of all my favorite female comedians (sans Kristen Wiig!) and wine? Sold. It did not disappoint. The blonde on the way left (sorry I don’t know her name) stole the show, I thought. Not to mention a breakthrough performance by Tina Fey (wink wink). Wine, women and a whole lotta WHAT HAPPENED. Get the girls together, get 16 bottles of wine and get in your pajamas. It’s that kind of movie.

Synopsis: When longtime friends meet up for a wine-soaked birthday getaway in Napa Valley, their perfectly planned weekend turns messier by the minute.

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey

Well? What do you think of my Netflix-isn’t-dead-list-of-things-to-watch-so-you-don’t die article? I know there are SO many other titles that are good, but my hand is tired of typing.

Enjoy your time with family and friends. Enjoy Netflix. Don’t worry about the dishes right now. Do them later.

Thanks, bye!
